A natural vegetable garden “Oborozukiyo” was established in Roka.

A scene where the moon is faintly misty on a spring night.
The name of the haze changes to “oboro” at night.
This means “haze” at night.
The newly installed moon-viewing platform is not only a place to view and observe the moon, but also a place to listen to animals, insects, plants, water, wind, and their voices that live there. Since ancient times, the moon has been an object of appreciation as well as a symbol of fertility, women’s wealth, and life and death.

By adopting an agricultural method that is conscious of the rhythm of the moon, which we are forgetting today, Roka Vegetable Garden “Oborozukiyo” will be a space that brings happiness not only to people, but also to all living things, including those that we cannot see.

【Roka Nature Vegetable Garden】
Unlike conventional flat vegetable gardens, the topography is formed by reading the surrounding topography, the flow of water, and the condition of the land. The construction method incorporates old civil engineering techniques*. The field, which used to be a place of stagnant drainage, is dug down to create a flow of water by digging down the land, and the leftover soil that emerged is used as fill. The soil stop is made from branches and leaves from the mountain maintenance. This allows a variety of vegetation to grow. Vegetables and flowers are grown using clay dumplings* devised by Masanobu Fukuoka, fruit trees are grown from seedlings to fit in with the land, and trees such as cherry trees and willow trees are placed in their respective vegetation areas. The landscaping, planting, and garden path design incorporate garden production techniques* to create a sense of fun and anticipation while walking around. The garden is designed to become an integral part of the landscape. It is an orchard, a garden, and nature, a place where all living things can live together amidst a variety of plants.

Old civil engineering techniques*

Civil engineering technology using organic materials. By using natural materials found in the region, the circulation of the land is created, which becomes a landscape unique to the land.

Clay dumplings*

Clay dumplings invented by Mr. Tadashi Fukuoka, author of “Revolution of a Straw Clay” are practiced in the vegetable garden of “Roka”. The clay dumplings are made by mixing seeds of many vegetables and flowers into clay, kneading, rounding, and drying. Clay dumplings can create a place for not only people but also other living things to live. Clay dumplings sense changes in soil conditions and temperature, germinate at natural timing, and grow together with native grasses.

Techniques for creating a garden*

We use techniques that do not go against nature but make use of natural materials, such as the shapes of mountains and rivers, the stories of trees’ growth, and the movements of animals. We express the various emotions that people feel in nature.
