【Profile Yuzuho Matsuoka】
Yuzuho Matsuoka was born in Hyogo, Japan in 1996, and graduated from Kyoto University of Arts in 2021 with a master’s degree in oil painting in the field of arts and crafts. She creates paintings that approach the function of human vision by painting plaid patterns on square canvases with acrylic paint and then partially heaping colored surfaces with abstract shapes on top of the plaid patterns. The layers created by the overlapping patterns give the impression of a three-dimensional work, and make the viewer reconsider the relationship between the painting and the viewer. In recent years, he has also produced works using textiles based on the nature and origins of painting. Major exhibitions include: solo exhibition “Narrowed Vision” at Kyoto Tsutaya Gallery, Kyoto (2023); “Idemitsu Art Award Artist Selection 2023” at The National Art Center, Tokyo (2023); solo exhibition “Redundant Moon” at CANDYBAR GALLERY, Tokyo (2023); solo exhibition “Looking at the Sky through the Hole of a Needle” at FOAM CONTEMPORARY, Tokyo. Major awards include the Excellence Prize at “Pommery Prize Kyoto 2023” in 2023, the Proactive Prize at “ART AWARD TOKYO MARUNOUCHI 2021” in 2021, and the Student Special Prize at “Shell Art Award 2020” in 2020.
